2023.03.18 18:50 5h0rgunn Escalation in Indian Territory Victoria Americana Chapter 20

[First] [Prev] [Next]
Panic spread on the frontier at the news of the White River defeat. Settlers brought their families within the walls of Greenville and Fort Wayne for protection and others fled to Chillicothe or further east.
The truth was, however, that the United Indian Nations were unprepared for war and Tecumseh was unable to capitalise on his victory. The newly re-formed UIN was only a few months old and war hadn't been a primary topic of discussion until now. Some of Tecumseh's allies declined to send warriors to help him in fear of retaliation. They argued that he'd acted rashly: St. Clair should have been conciliated, not attacked. Of the 800 men who had come some went home after the battle, stating that they needed to protect their homes from retaliation or that they needed to go hunting before winter.
Tecumapease was among those who hoped peace might still be possible, but Tecumseh disagreed. War was upon them now and there was no avoiding it. Tecumseh left on another speaking tour to rally allies to their cause. In his absence, he selected Tecumapease to lead their people and her husband Wahsikegaboe to act as war chief. Wahsikegaboe went on the offensive, raiding the frontier around Fort Wayne and other US Army outposts in an effort to isolate them.
After James Wilkinson resigned his post as commanding general of the US Army in order to command the Provisional Army of the United States, President Jefferson appointed Jacob Brown to replace him. Brown started putting together an army in the east to march into Indiana and deal with the problem.
St. Clair, meanwhile, was temporarily stripped of his office pending a court-martial. He was eventually exonerated of wrongdoing, since it was the United Indian Nations who'd attacked first and used underhanded tactics to achieve victory, but he never returned to office in the Northwest Territory.
All these developments were closely watched by the British in Upper Canada, who had a standing policy of weakening the US position around the Great Lakes by providing the nations in that region with the means to assert their own independence. Practically speaking, this meant they had been arming Indians since the American Revolution.
British agents had already met with Tecumseh before the Battle of the White River, but didn't deliver any material support until after the battle. Delivery was simple enough. Several nations had people living on both sides of the border. One such nation was the Ottawa, who inhabited both shores of Lake Huron as well as the islands in between. By the terms of the Jay Treaty of 1794, Indians were permitted free and unfettered travel across the border in both directions (not that British or American authorities could've done much to stop them even if they wanted to). Sending weapons to Tecumseh was a simple matter of putting them in the hands of Ottawa sympathetic to his cause, who would deliver the weapons to their relatives across Lake Huron to be taken south to the White River country.
Arming enemies of the US might seem like a contradiction considering the Royal Navy's roundabout sale of frigates to the US Navy discussed in Chapter 9. Which side of this war was Britain on? Britain was at peace with both the United States and France, but both nations threatened Britain's position in the Atlantic and in America. It was in Britain's best interest, therefore, to keep them both as weak as possible. If that meant shoring up the US Navy so it might stand a chance against the French navy, so be it. If that meant distracting US land forces by opening up another war front to allow France to gain a more firm foothold in the southeast, then it would be done.
News of Tecumseh's victory and the influx of weapons promised to those who joined the UIN drew some fence-sitting chiefs to the Shawnee chief's side. His 600 men grew to 1,000.
However, Little Turtle and Black Hoof were still staunch supporters of peace with the United States. Indiana had already fought against the white man and lost, they argued, further bloodshed was a pointless waste. The way forward was accommodation and adaptation to the new world they found themselves in, not war. Accommodationist chiefs successfully convinced the majority of the Shawnee and Miami to remain neutral. Other nations, such as the Illinois and Potawatomi, were far enough away from the centre of action that they saw no benefit in getting directly involved, even though many were sympathetic to Tecumseh.
One of the most difficult obstacles for Tecumseh to overcome was the fact that the Americans had promised the land west of the Greenville Line would remain in Indian hands forever. So far, they'd kept their promise. Accommodationists had only to point this fact out to demonstrate that Tecumseh had brought this war on himself and was endangering everyone else's position in the process.
This war of words played out over the remainder of August and into September as the frontier bled from Wahsikegaboe's raids. While Brown gathered 1,200 men to march on Chillicothe, Harrison changed tactics. Rather than asking chiefs for neutrality, he appealed directly to individual warriors. A musket and a generous sign-up bonus were advertised for any man who offered his services to the US Army. Hundreds of Shawnee, Miami, Delaware, Wabash, and Illinois men influenced by accommodationist chiefs trickled into Vincennes, Fort Wayne, and Greenville to sign up.
Jacob Brown arrived in Fort Greenville in mid-September and found over 250 warriors there waiting for their muskets and sign-up bonuses. Harrison was unable to make good on his promise to those who arrived in Greenville, since he had no jurisdiction in the Northwest Territory. However, Brown saw the value in having Indians on his side, so he made good on Harrison's promise. He vetted the Indians and turned away anyone from a village known to have sympathies for Tecumseh, whittling the number of warriors to an even 200. After a quick exchange of letters with Harrison a plan was agreed to and in late September 1,400 men set out from Greenville while 800 left Vincennes marching to converge on Tecumseh's village.

2023.03.11 13:10 Embarrassed-Laugh-33 Cheaper Housing Shower Thoughts

Hi Neighbors,
So I was just daydreaming about some out-of-the-box housing ideas, before accepting current prices to buy a house in <1hour walking distance of IU Bloomington campus. However, frugality loves company and many of these plans would require drumming up 5+ other interested parties. Also IANA real estate developer, hotelier etc. and what follows may be total nonsense.
-Do you think there would be interest in the following?
-What problems might I not be thinking of?

  1. Living a dorm-style ADU like below (a bus ride away from campus) w/ access to common areas that are regularly cleaned by professionals at $300-$400/month. With a boarding option that provides basic food (of the coffee, tea, juice, oatmeal, fruit, sandwitch mats, salad & plant-centric soup/stirfry variety) for $150/month more)?
https://vestamodular.com/inventory/dorms-workforce-housing/single-unit/5-bed-5-bath/
-What about sharing a bathroom with another person for 1/2 the price? (I got an interesting quote for installation of a 44 modular dorm w/shared bathrooms that worked out to $25k/head) What about living out of bus-service from campus, with a shuttle option for $75/month? An app/system that lets people pay ~$3 to get a ride into campus or get collect that money for giving rides?
  1. Living in a pet (and gardening) friendly tiny homes village on the outskirts of town that lets people buy used tiny homes for $20-60K* plug them in for $7k (IIRC that's the cost) and then pay just $75/rent + utilities afterward? A $400-500/month rent-to-own option? A tiny condos option (with a nice shared space and possibly shuttle?)? A work/build your own option helping build more tiny homes with guidance from a master carpenter (IIRC unskilled labor can halve the price & helping build your home is satisfying)?
https://tinyhouselistings.com/countries/united-states/states/indiana
  1. A fancy commuter shuttle/van that makes the 1 hour 10 min ish drive from terre haute to bloomington and back? Bundled with discount membership at some nice co-working space to hang out and stash your stuff during the day? Serving breakfast and lunch? The number of $20k-80k single family houses and $120kish duplexes in terre haute is insane. An hour and10 min commute to work is annoying, even if you can just nap. But I wonder if there's something to be done with passing some of the current $600/month vs. almost $1100/month for a studio rent difference to a bus driver.

2023.02.27 15:56 MagickMane Slavery is a choice rebooted

slavery is a choice cuz most “black” people are indians who’ve been integrated into the napoleon (American) school system and taught a new history. Making us believe majority of blacks were slaves when in actuality the colonizers just bought the land from our ancestors and created laws , banking and school systems in areas they call “states” a reference point. Indiana before it was purchased and made a state was a providence named Vincennes. And that harriet tubmans real name is actuality Araminta Ross . To further prove how history has been manipulated and that everything is about status in America which we’ve been stripped of almost willing , as ignorance to the law is not innocence making slavery a choice

2023.02.06 23:34 SameWhile6973 When is it worth it to buy a house with a small downpayment?

My wife, 8 month old baby boy and I are hopefully moving to Indiana if everything works out (waiting for a job offer). We are dying to have our own space, and especially for our kid and those yet to come.
Indiana is cheap when it comes to housing prices compared to other states. And I've found both remodeled and new construction homes selling for $180-$210k (examples below) with 3bds 1-2ba.
I just found this house (2nd link) which is a new construction. My question is, is it worth it to buy a house like this with only a %3 down payment or even getting a mortgage with no downpayment. I don't know if that's even possible though.
I ask this because I hate the fact of paying a monthly rent of $1,400ish for a 3/2 bedroom apartment when I could own a house and put that money towards my own house and build equity or how much would you suggest saving for a downpayment for a house in this price range? Also should I wait longer and buy a bigger house? We are maybe planning to have 3-4 kids total but I think investing early could be a good asset in the long run.
Also, Would it be cheaper to build?
What are your thoughts, teachings, comments...?
I appreciate you sharing anything with us! Thank you!
Things you probably will ask:

My wife and I, along with our 3 toddlers are planning on moving to Bloomington next year. We've already been heavily searching Zillow. Just wanted some opinions on how living in the area is for non college connected people. What are some of your personal pros and cons?
We are moving to be closer to family and the public schools seem to be some of the best in Indiana.

2023.01.29 01:03 Midwestern_Mariner Recommended Mortgage Lenders in the area?

Not from around Indy, but planning on a move there in a few months. Scouting out options online and wanted to get folks take here based on their experiences, whether it's: rates, quality of service, help, timeliness of closure, etc. We currently use a local lender where we're from (WA State), and I'd like to stay down that route unless there's a lender out there that'll give us an amazing rate. From what I can tell based on Zillow, other reviews, my list looks like the following to contact:
  1. Union Savings Bank
  2. MJW Mortgage
  3. Indiana Members Credit Union
  4. Ruoff Mortgage
  5. Cross Country Mortgage
  6. Rocket Mortgage (Least Preferred)

2022.12.28 14:06 xXDJAkiAngelXx My friend Visited me before he Died

Alright so this is the first time I have posted this on a site like this before, its been a few years so please bare with me. I am 28 years old now and this happened when I was 17 years old. Sorry for the long story by the way...
So, I have this friend named Corey, he was crazy but a really cool dude. Everyone who met him usually liked him he graduated high school before me and went off to college in Vincennes, Indiana. One school day when I was in study hall, last class of the day which I believe was on a Wednesday, I was sitting at a desk next to one of the windows that we have in the classroom that faced the entrance that the school buses would come in. I looked out of the window just in time to see what looked like my friend Corey coming in on a bike and a Tie Dyed t-shirt. I remember thinking when I saw him "what is he doing here? isn't he suppose to be in Vincennes?" and then I left it at that.
However, that isn't the end. So the end of day bell rung I collected my things and headed out to the hallway to get into my locker to grab some textbooks and packets to take home that I needed for my homework assignment and wait for my boyfriend at the time because him and I usually walked out together. Well, he showed up and we headed down the stairs to door 13, where we usually exited for the bus riders. As my boyfriend and I headed out the Door, I saw Corey standing by the sidewalk, I looked at him and was confused. He then told me that he was going to get hit by a car and die. I looked at him in disbelief and said "No you're not" and I had the ugliest look on my face because I didn't believe him, I tugged slightly on my boyfriends arm to get his attention and tell him Corey was here and he said that he is going to get hit by a car, My boyfriend at the time looked back and I looked back and Corey was gone.
My boyfriend at the time said it was impossible for Corey to be here because he was still in Vincennes, as I suspected, which left me even more confused. I got home and told my mom about it and the topic was just dropped...Lo and behold, I come into school on Thursday morning just to get called to the office. Not gonna lie I was kind of scared because I thought I had somehow gotten myself in trouble, so I drop my things off in my locker, let my teacher in my morning class know, and headed to the office. When I arrived, which wasn't a very far walk it was just the opposite direction of the cafeteria on the first floor. I was greeted by the school counselor for my grade, which I was a Junior at the time, and she escorted me to the meeting room. When I got there, I saw my boyfriend and a few of my other friends there. They were crying, I didn't know what was going on.
Then, like a damn bomb, my counselor hit me with the "Corey was found dead this morning at about 5:30am, he was hit by a car." I was STUNNED like I cannot emphasis that enough. The first words that came out of my mouth where "No-way, I literally just saw him yesterday." which In received very confused and angry looks, I just shut up and processed what I was being told and I just cried. I cried so hard to where I didn't even know if I would of been able to make it through the rest of the school week...I managed, somehow, I thought it was a miracle.
I made it through the day, magically, and then went home to see that the news was on, and sure enough. Corey was dead. The driver of the vehicle that hit him, wasn't paying attention because she was looking on the floormats for something she lost, and ended up running him over. That is still one of the weirdest things that I remember to this day.

2022.12.21 05:27 Pretty_Pianist435 [Tenant Subletting Room - US- Alabama] Which Tenant Should I Choose?

Update (2/22/23): Chose male tenant, he paid for Zillow background and credit check (my protocol), I realized his credit was terrible even though he said he had "perfect credit," called him to talk about issue and he didn't pick up, texted him, he said he would call back and he didn't realize "the late car payments my little brother made" would affect his credit since he was a cosigner to the car, didn't call back, and I dropped him as a candidate after waiting too long. Female candidate could not even pay the $30 Zillow background and credit fee. I finally went on the offensive and started LOOKING for roommates instead of them finding my posting. Found a nice guy who said he liked trying new things and meeting new people. Interviewed him, did tour, he paid for background and credit check same day, I did employment check on him, called his references, he moved in 3 weeks later. 1 month in and he is best roommate I have ever had. Hired a side dog walker as well when I need her. Rest is history for now. :-) Thank you to those who gave me a hard knock on my expectations. When you finally get someone good, you know the trash you were settling for.
Tldr: Choose tenant who is opposite sex, good credit and background, meek and not really my ideal personality for roommate but sounds like he can pay the bills or other tenant who is a felon with bad credit who initially was not upfront with background but has dog and is willing to take my dog to dog park and walks, which is what I mainly opened up the room for? 😂
I am female, 28 years old, doing my doctorate, which lasts about 2 more years, and am renting an apartment with a spare bedroom. Personally, I would prefer no roommates. I used to have a very standoffish dog that didn't like people or other dogs, so him and I have been doing just fine without roommate. That dog has since passed, and I now have a new dog who's a much more extroverted Jack Russell mix who likes company and play. I feel sad because I work and study so long at school that he's alone in the apartment (still gets his walks morning and night) and ripped up the couch and shoes because he's nervous and has so much energy. I want to be there to train him better, and I don't want my choice of education to be the reason why he can't have company. So... I've decided to open up my spare bedroom for rent... for my dog to have dog-friendly company. 🥲 I said for $500/month (Wi-Fi and all utilities included), I preferably want a female roommate with their own dog who is willing to involve my dog on their dog park trips and walks! Background and credit check required. No smoking, felon, or bad credit. Would like them to stay at least a year.
After vetting out many applicants on Roomies.com, Facebook Marketplace, and Craigslist for ~2 weeks, here are 2 tenant options (believe me when I say I vetted out a lot of people to get to these 2). Which one do you think I should choose?:
Tenant 1:
  • Male, 23 years old
  • Radio engineer in Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Moving back to the area because this is where he grew up and he is "homesick" he says, but his aunt and rest of family do not want to house him? Strange to me
  • Has good credit, good background (outside of a traffic ticket back in the day)
  • Has 2 part time jobs and own car
  • Says he can stay 6 months and if he likes it, will stay longer. Interested in doing a 1 month trial period to make sure it fits for both of us.
  • No dog, but says he is willing to watch my dog when I am away on trips. Says he likes animals because he grew up on farm
  • He vapes, but says he will vape outside if he is accepted
  • Didn't have much to say on the phone. Sounds a little meek. Not my type of roommate, but sounds like he would pay the bills.
Tenant 2:
  • Female, 40s
  • Has a yorkipoo service dog for seizures (has not had seizure for 9 years, but says if she has one to make sure not to stick anything in her mouth)
  • Does not have a car because her last car overheated
  • Her ex-husband, who she says was a toxic marriage but they still love each other so she wants to stay in the area to be near him, is her ride to and from places
  • Says she is on disability welfare and can pay rent with it (rent is 55% of her disability welfare)
  • Says because she is always at home that she can take my dog with her dog to dog park and walks
  • Wants to stay as long as "you will let me"
  • Has bad credit. When asked if she can pass a background check, she says yes. A week later when I ask her to pay $30 to do the background and credit check, she reveals that she has a felony for child neglect, served jail time, and gave up her children for adoption, who were later murdered by the Hart family in a murder suicide on national news- which she conveniently did not tell me upfront when I asked her the first time.
Well? What do you guys think? 😂 I am extremely aware that Tenant 1 is a better option than Tenant 2! And I wish my options were better (I had a cool lady from Indiana with a yellow Labrador who was my first pick, but she got stuck in Indiana because of bad circumstances so could not continue with the application process. There was an entrepreneur who could definitely pay the bills, but he was hitting on me, so that didnt work out. Nothing wrong with finding romance in different places, but the last time I roommated with somebody who was hitting on me, It turns out his opportunism extended to not paying the rent and wanting to take advantage of other people through it. There was a Hispanic guy fresh out of a divorce who wanted to bring his kids over and was dog friendly, which I was okay with, but his credit was bad and he wasn't very responsive).
I honestly am considering Tenant #2 because I'm not even opening this room for myself. I'm opening it up for my dog, and she does seem like since she'll be there and be more company for my dog. She also sounds like she needs a second chance, which I am open to giving. Her and I could also have a conversation much better compared to Tenant #1. But the fact that she wasn't upfront with me even though I asked twice if something would show up on her background check was practically a deal breaker for me! But I also worry Tenant #1 and I wouldn't necessarily mesh that well personality-wise and may not stay as long. This is supposed to be for my dog, not for me!
Should I not even be opening up a room for rent at all? It makes me sad that my dog is not happy in the apartment without more company. I can only take him to the dog park once a week. I already attempted to rent at houses for my dog to have more space and yard, but in this area, for some strange reason, people are really dishonest even as landlords. So I decided to get my own apartment.
Should I just wait and keep looking to find the more ideal candidate? Should I just hire a dog walker? That's an option, but I have to put into account that that's extra expenses every month compared to saving money with a roommate. I'm currently in winter break, so a potential roommate moving in around this time would be best before school starts.
I'm also open to getting a hard knock on the way I'm thinking about this. 😂

2022.12.19 04:35 AvailableLobster25 Two Year Living Situation- Fresh Out of College

Hello Reddit, I am a single 22 yo, graduating college with an engineering degree this May. I have already accepted a job offer paying 75K/yr, in a small town (2k pop) in Indiana. There is a city 45 minutes away, but I really don’t like drive that long daily, so I am thinking about living in the small town ([edit]: or in 20minutes nearby is another small town.) It is a very low cost of living area, so I am considering a few different living options. [Edit: I also have pretty insigificant student loans that would be completely cancelled if Biden's plan goes through]
There are two problems I am trying to navigate, there doesn’t appear to be many rentals or and only some houses that have online listings (I assume it's due to the fact it’s a rural area with more old people not doing online things) and that this job offer is a developmental program that will only last two years (Will be offered another position at the end – just in a different area).
Is it worth buying a house? I don’t need much and the few options in close areas can go as low as 50-70k. I don’t have a preference with renting or owning but trying to make a logical decision that won’t hurt me too much. I would probably rent based on this information, but there are literally 0 rentals in the immediate area online (Zillow) [Some options with Facebook marketplace but they don’t seem ideal with price and location as I don’t want to pay 1100$ to live in someone’s basement].
I will have 8k in savings, will receive 4k relocation 30days before my first day, and 10k sign on that I will receive 30days after my first day, that I would be willing to use all of for a home. I think it could be fun to live in my own home, however renting also has its own benefits. I have decent credit score (750ish), but pretty limited income over the past two years with only my summer internships.
So, does it make sense to buy a house for only 2 years or could I? I know you shouldn’t buy a house if you stay for only that long, but the rental options seem somewhat grim admittedly. Or is there a secret in finding a decent rental apartment or rental house?

2022.12.11 16:00 Massons_Blog Happy 206th Birthday, Indiana!

Indiana became a state on December 11, 1816. For giggles, and because I'm a nerd, on December 11, 2015, I started a bicentennial series on my blog where I spent the year doing a survey of Indiana history which ultimately ran to about 115,000 words. Nobody has time for that. I was pretty happy with this summary of the series that I posted on the bicentennial. That's still pretty wordy, so here's what ultimately ran in the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette which had caught wind of my series and asked me to write something for the paper. This was from six years ago:
Two hundred years ago, President Madison signed the congressional resolution admitting Indiana into the Union. At the time, support for the transition from territory to state was not unanimous. The opposition argued that the state’s population was too small to support itself. Indiana’s population was clustered primarily in a crescent running from the Whitewater River Valley, down to the Ohio River, and back up the lower Wabash. When compared to other midwestern states, much of Indiana’s distinct character can be attributed to the fact that its early settlement came mostly from the South. (Morton Marcus has described the state as the “middle finger of the South thrust into the North.”)
As the statehood debate took shape, the factions were roughly divided into a western, anti-statehood, pro-slavery group led by William Henry Harrison and an eastern, pro-statehood, anti-slavery group led by Jonathan Jennings. The Quakers of the Whitewater Valley were a prominent factor in the east. The Jennings faction criticized the Harrison forces as aristocratic elitists. The Harrison faction argued that statehood advocates were self-interested and eager to occupy the new government offices statehood would bring. John Badollet of Vincennes described the Jennings faction as “empty babblers, democratic to madness, having incessantly the people in their mouths and their dear selves in their eyes.”
Ultimately, of course, the Jennings faction prevailed. Indiana became a state and slavery was mostly outlawed. History has a funny way of reversing fortunes though. While Jennings would become Indiana’s first governor, alcoholism would ultimately result in his dying penniless and buried in an unmarked grave. Meanwhile, William Henry Harrison went on to die in the White House.
Statehood having been secured, Indiana’s first mission would be to hack its way out of the wilderness, building infrastructure and appropriating land from the Native Americans who lived here. Early Hoosiers were ambitious and saw opportunity in the future of the state. Efforts to build roads, canals, and eventually railroads dominated early state politics. Ambition arguably grew into hubris with the passage of the Mammoth Internal Improvement Act of 1836. To secure enough votes for passage, infrastructure projects all over the state were promised. The expense likely would have been unsustainable in the best of economic times, but the Panic of 1837 made the undertaking impossible. The debt payments were ruinous, and most of the projects were left incomplete. And yet, despite the turmoil, the ambition bore fruit. The skeleton of an infrastructure program had begun, and the State would develop and eventually prosper.
By the late 19th century, Indiana was at the highwater mark of its influence. Politically, it was a swing state. Republicans and Democrats were evenly balanced in the state, and from the period of 1869 through 1921, Indiana would supply four Vice-Presidents, one President, and two unsuccessful vice-presidential candidates. About the same time, the state experienced a golden age of literature with authors such as Edward Eggleston, Lew Wallace, James Whitcomb Riley, Booth Tarkington, and George Ade rising to national prominence. In 1916, Indiana was understandably proud of its accomplishments. In many ways, the ambitions of those first Hoosiers had been realized. The centennial observations were extensive. Among other things, Governor Ralston founded the state park system to “stand forever as a token of the past,” and “bring health, wealth and happiness” to future generations.
In the years following World War I, Indiana suffered a decline. Grand Dragon D.C. Stephenson went from, in his words, “a nothing from nowhere, really” to “the law in Indiana.” He did so by leading the Klan to overwhelming prominence in the state. Thanks in large part to Stephenson’s recruiting efforts, in the early 1920s, the Klan counted nearly one-third of Indiana’s white men as members and put Ed Jackson into the governor’s office. The Great War, disruptions of modernization, changes of the Progressive Era, and an influx of Catholics all seemed to be reasons for the popularity of the movement. The Klan’s fall was also, fortunately, rapid; though the circumstances of its demise were anything but fortunate. Stephenson was convicted for murdering Marge Oberholtzer. When Jackson would not pardon him, Stephenson started telling the Indianapolis Times what he knew about corrupt politicians, and the Klan’s influence collapsed.
Through World War II, the latter half of the 20th century, and into the present, we have experienced revolutions in transportation and communications that have more tightly intertwined Indiana with the rest of the United States and with the world generally. Instead of being active in our own communities, we are often passive observers of events that take place elsewhere. In a lot of ways, Indiana has lost its identity as a distinct place. We traded our one-class basketball tournament for Daylight Saving Time! Our bicentennial observances have been less exuberant than our centennial observances.
It is my hope that, in our third century, Hoosiers can redirect their attention locally and regain the energy and ambition that drove the first generations to carve a great state out of the wilderness. To do so, we could do worse than improving our efforts to reconnect with our neighbors, devote our attention to local government and community events, and make our cities and towns places our children are eager and proud to call home. Greatness is not beyond reach. Consider that Golden Age Athens did work that still shapes the world today despite having a population of only about 300,000. And England, a relatively small backwater island nation at the beginning of the 17th century went on to rule a vast empire upon which the sun never set. Indiana can at least strive to improve its fortunes significantly in the next hundred years.
We need to educate our children, improve our infrastructure, cultivate the sciences, literature, arts, and productive economic activity. We should not be passive observers, complaining about the present or dwelling on nostalgia for the past. We need to actively create our future. If we do so, perhaps our tricentennial will mark a new high water mark for the Hoosier State.
